China

PingPing Ren (aged 24) and her family come from a poor village called "Cold Water" in the rural area of Tumen, Jilin Province, China.
PingPing graduated from secondary school in 2002 and moved on to study English at Changchung Technical University. Upon her graduation with a diploma in English in 2004, PingPing was hired as an English grammar teacher at Tumen River Vocational School (TRVS). TRVS was founded in 2002 with the purpose to provide vocational training for the local secondary school dropouts. China provides nine years of free education up to secondary three (equivalent to grade nine in Canada). Many students from rural areas stop going to school after secondary three because their parents may need them to work in the farm or have no money to support them. Many of them are not eager to work in a farm like their parents and yet they have nowhere to turn for a better life without proper education. Many of them are neglected and misguided.

Peter Hahn, the founder and principal of the TRVS was burdened by the vast need of an alternate high school program. He desired to see that the Chosunjok Chinese youth would have a brighter future so he set up a dynamic focused three-year program of vocational study. Peter selects his teachers carefully and writes about PingPing that she "has set an example in all her responsibilites as an English grammar teacher, student counselor and dormitory supervisor while demonstrating a quiet leadership and promoting positive thoughts with situational awareness. Her positive can-do attitude and inclusiveness are infectious; her students feel they are valued, concerned and motivated . . . What is noteworthy is she also supports her siblings with her small income and extra salary working part time tutoring the city students on her private time."

Crandall University where PingPing is attending

CBM is seeking to build a stronger partnership with the TRVS where PingPing was on staff. With the support from Canadian Baptist Women and the Crandall University (formerly known as Atlantic Baptist University), we are proud to see that PingPing Ren has received a full tuition scholarship for pursuing her education in Canada. Further, Canadian Baptist Women are contributing an annual scholarship of $6,000 to cover her additional living expenses while attending Crandall University. In September, 2009, PingPing started her Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies program.
