Gender and Hope: Recovering God’s Dream for Humanity
An Opportunity To Discover and Dialogue

We live in a society that is of two minds when it comes to gender: on the one hand it claims that men and women are equal and should be treated as such, but on the other hand it stereotypes each gender in its advertising and visual culture. Talk shows and self-help books sometimes emphasize our differences, telling us how to “be a man” or “be a woman” while at other times it is considered wrong to even mention differences. No wonder we’re confused.

Is this as good as it gets? Or is there a better way?

In the midst of this confusion the Church is called by God to be a counter-cultural community that recognizes and affirms the giftedness and calling of God upon each person’s life, no matter their race or gender. Genesis says that “God created human beings . . . male and female”, and that, together, we bear the image of God. God’s dream for us is that we learn how to do this and to live into this.

This short on-line course will explore significant Scriptural themes and passages to help you gain a better understanding of God’s desire and delight for women and men. We believe that the Bible is the Word of God and so we need to reflect deeply upon it and integrate it into our lives. Through readings and responses and on-line interaction, you will be invited to clarify your own thinking and approach to these issues.

Each week you will be asked to download three ½ hour lectures from the media site to watch and interact with the material. Discussion questions will be posted on our blog site for you to engage with other students in dialogue.
